Alaska Senate rejects healthcare compact bill in 11-9 vote

The Alaska Senate rejected legislation Wednesday that would have allowed out-of-state healthcare providers to practice in Alaska through interstate compacts.

Senate CS for House Bill 110 Finance failed by a vote of 9 yeas to 11 nays.

Opponents said providers entering through interstate compacts would lack experience with Indigenous peoples and understanding of Alaska's diversity. One senator said healthcare providers entering through such compacts do not have to meet the same professional requirements and education responsibilities that Alaska healthcare providers do.

A state senator said opening Alaska to interstate compacts would mean having healthcare providers who do not understand the state. The senator referenced concerns raised by a previous speaker from Anchorage.

The presiding officer announced the final tally after senators voted. The officer said 9 yeas and 11 nays meant Senate CS for House Bill 110 Finance had failed to pass the Senate.

Supporters had said the compacts would help address healthcare provider shortages in rural Alaska. Opponents said Alaska's healthcare needs, particularly in serving Indigenous populations, require providers with specific training and understanding of the state's diversity.

The bill's defeat means Alaska will not join interstate healthcare compacts through this legislation. Healthcare providers from other states will continue to be required to meet Alaska's existing licensing standards to practice in the state.
