Alaska electricity prices eased in June, but not for households

Alaska's overall electricity price fell in June, per new U.S. Energy Information Administration figures published this week. The overall price dropped from 26.94 cents per kilowatt-hour in May to 24.27 cents in June, with sector prices ranging from 21.02 to 28.21 cents, down from 23.71 to 31.36 cents in May.

Almost all of that is industrial, which fell from 31.36 cents to 21.02. Residential power went from 28.23 cents in May to 28.21 in June, and commercial from 23.71 to 23.42. Against June 2025, every sector is higher, 24.27 cents overall against 23.49.

Statewide sales also declined, from about 480.1 million kilowatt-hours in May to roughly 460.9 million in June, against 459 million a year earlier.

Matanuska Electric Association's Q3 2026 Cost of Power Adjustment, effective July 1, added about $14.53 to a typical monthly bill. Rep. Donna Mears told the Alaska State House Resources Committee on April 24 that "energy prices will be going up for Alaska."
