Alaska lets records managers flag in-state moves of migratory students

Alaska added an in-state Move Alert to its Migrant Web System, known as MIS2000, the Department of Education and Early Development said. A records manager submits the alert when a migratory child moves between districts. MIS2000 then automatically emails the receiving district's records manager.

For moves across state lines, the department notifies other states when children leave Alaska. It receives notices when migratory children arrive from elsewhere. Districts must promptly report where students are headed.

The alerts do not replace district duties. Districts still must coordinate services, transfer records and meet MIS2000 deadlines. Title I-C's goal is continuity for students who move often.

Alaska's Title I-C program served more than 15,000 migratory children in the 2024-25 school year, across 39 of the state's 53 districts. Fishing work drives 73% of the program's Certificates of Eligibility.

A needs assessment completed in June 2025 found migratory children lose continuity when they move between rural and urban districts. Families reported large class sizes and communication gaps.

Districts must also submit Summer Services and Summer Term Course History Reports by Sept. 30.
