AGDC restates in-state gas conditions as Trump cites Asian interest in Alaska LNG

The Alaska Gasline Development Corporation on Tuesday welcomed President Donald Trump's remarks on the Alaska LNG Project and restated its conditions for supporting it. Trump spoke at a Wasilla rally that day, Oct. 13, saying Taiwan had agreed to buy project gas for 20 years and invest $4.4 billion, on top of $50 billion he said South Korea had committed.

AGDC's conditions remain the same: rights to enough gas to meet Alaska's in-state energy needs "now and for generations to come," no fiscal burden on state taxpayers, and continued ownership and protection of project data, permits and physical assets. Its release lists no dollar figures or signed agreements.

"AGDC remains fully focused on bringing the Alaska LNG Project to fruition," said President Frank Richards. He said AGDC is supporting lead developer Glenfarne's work with international energy partners and the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Board chair Warren Christian said strong commercial interest from foreign partners reinforces AGDC's role as a supportive public partner while preserving protections that benefit local communities.

Glenfarne owns 75% of the project, according to a Glenfarne release. A Glenfarne executive said in May that the company had signed 13 million tonnes of LNG reservations.

Alaska News reported Oct. 1 that Seoul says the project still has to prove it can make money before South Korea commits, and Seoul has said South Korean investment remains under review.

A 2015 Federal Energy Regulatory Commission notice opening the project's environmental review named Alaska Native tribes and subsistence-dependent communities as stakeholders requiring consultation.
