A write-in candidate has entered Sitka's Assembly race for two seats

Mary Ann Hall is running for the Sitka Assembly as a write-in, and she has until Oct. 1 to file the paperwork that makes votes for her count. The election is five days later.

Her entry makes the Assembly the most crowded race on the ballot: four candidates for two seats. Nine printed candidates are running for six seats overall. Three want the mayor's job. Three are on the ballot for those two Assembly seats. And three are running for three School Board seats, which means nobody is being turned away there. One of the School Board seats is a one-year term left open by a resignation.

Write-in candidates have to file a letter of intent, the form declaring a candidacy, before their votes will be counted. Sitka runs its own election under its own code, and the city's calendar puts that deadline at Oct. 1.

Voters also decide a charter amendment on special elections.

Early voting opens Sept. 21 at Harrigan Centennial Hall. Both precincts vote Oct. 6, from 7 am to 8 pm.
