A viral claim about a Zuckerberg yacht and a Coast Guard call remains unverified

A skiff ran out of fuel this week in Southeast Alaska waters, and the Coast Guard says its crew was never in danger. What has drawn attention isn't the assist itself but an unverified claim circulating online: that a yacht reported to belong to Mark Zuckerberg was nearby and (as claimed in the viral post) didn't answer the radio. The Coast Guard has not confirmed that account, and there is no evidence for it beyond social-media posts.

Here is what the Coast Guard did say. Shannon Shepard, a Coast Guard public affairs specialist, said the agency determined at about 9 p.m. that the crew was not in distress and "subsequently issued a marine assistance request broadcast on their behalf." A marine assistance request is a call for voluntary help, not a distress broadcast. The Coast Guard has since suspended its search for the 12- to 14-foot aluminum skiff. Its statements do not identify which vessels heard the broadcast, or which, if any, declined it.

The rest comes from two people posting online, neither speaking for the Coast Guard, and each at a remove from the events. Michael Love, who said he was a passenger on the small-ship cruise that reached the skiff, wrote that his boat "rescued a stranded vessel last night" after, by his account, the Coast Guard radioed a yacht he identified as Zuckerberg's, "which was closer, and they repeatedly refused to respond." Love said there was "near unanimous booing when the captain announced this" — meaning his account traces to what the captain told passengers, not something he independently confirmed. Journalist Eric Umansky, who was not aboard, relayed a version of the same claim on Bluesky, writing that "Zuck's folks said no."

Neither the ownership of the yacht, its distance from the skiff, nor whether any vessel heard or ignored the broadcast has been independently confirmed. The Coast Guard, the only party here with direct radio records, has not addressed the claim.
