A 2024 crash near Denali came down to windshear and a short strip

In a finding published last June, more than a year after the fact, the National Transportation Safety Board explained why an airplane went down near Denali in September 2024. The pilot took off from a 600-foot private strip, ran into windshear and could not climb over the terrain ahead. The board put the probable cause as "failure to maintain clearance from terrain due to the airplane's encounter with windshear" during takeoff.

The pilot was not hurt. The airplane's right wing and fuselage were substantially damaged.

The board did not send anyone to the site. Its account comes from the pilot, who left the Yanert strip around 10 am on Sept. 4, 2024, and filed the report that became the record. The airplane had passed its annual inspection that March, and no mechanical failure was reported.

Wind is a recurring factor in Alaska crashes. The Federal Aviation Administration's Alaska Aviators Safety Handbook ranks inadequate compensation for it among the state's three leading causes of accidents. The agency's guidance for off-airport flying tells pilots not to take off at gross weight from short strips, and to add half again to whatever takeoff distance they calculate before counting on clearing an obstacle.
