NWS holds wind advisories for Windy Pass, Eastern Alaska Range

Drivers crossing Windy Pass and the Eastern Alaska Range face gusts to 65 mph this weekend.

The National Weather Service Fairbanks office has issued a wind advisory for Windy Pass in the Northern Denali Borough that is in effect until 4 a.m. Sunday, with southeast winds of 30 to 40 mph and gusts to 60 mph. A second advisory covers the Eastern Alaska Range north of Trims Camp until 7 a.m. Sunday, with south winds of 30 to 50 mph, gusts to 65 mph and a possible peak near 70 mph Saturday morning into early afternoon.

"Strong winds could blow around unsecured objects. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles," the advisories said.

Winds at Windy Pass are expected to ease slightly Saturday afternoon and evening, then build again overnight.

NWS Fairbanks said on X that it downgraded High Wind Watches for Windy Pass and Isabel Pass to advisories on Sept. 23. Thursday's advisories cover the two areas separately.
