Why the fight over the Strait of Hormuz shows up in Alaska's budget

Alaska's budget rides on the price of oil — and right now, the price of oil rides on a strait half a world away.

The Strait of Hormuz carried about a fifth of the world's oil before war broke out Feb. 28. Attacks on shipping halted tanker traffic earlier this year, driving up prices and volatility for every energy-dependent economy — including Alaska, where state revenue rises and falls with the barrel. A June 17 memorandum called for reopening the strait, but the U.S. and Iran have disputed commercial transit ever since, and President Donald Trump declared the ceasefire "over" July 10 even as talks continue.

Meanwhile, shipping companies whose vessels were hit still have no idea how they'd be paid. Asked aboard Air Force One on Monday, Trump described no payment process: "We're going to use Iran's money to pay for the damage they did," he said, repeating a pledge that frozen Iranian funds would cover ship and cargo damage. He said Iran came to the table because of U.S. strikes; Iranian officials dispute that account, saying no meeting is scheduled and describing any engagement as indirect. "If we don't make a deal, we go back to the same thing," Trump said.

For Alaska, the stakes cut both ways: a war premium on crude lifts the oil revenue the state runs on, while Alaskans pay the same premium in fuel and freight — and the volatility turns the next revenue forecast into a guess. What to watch is whether the talks actually reopen the strait, and whether the frozen-funds pledge ever becomes a payment process.
