Wasilla streets close Tuesday for Trump rally; expect highway delays
Streets around Wasilla's Menard Memorial Sports Center will close from 8 am to 6 pm Tuesday for President Donald Trump's rally there, and drivers should expect delays of up to 30 minutes throughout the day on the Glenn and Parks highways between Anchorage and Wasilla, Wasilla police and Alaska State Troopers said Monday.
Clapp Street, Beacon Street and Aviation Avenue will be closed, the agencies said, with no pedestrian access to the Menard Center or along the closed roads. Alaska 511 also lists Mack Drive, between Aviation Avenue and Clapp Street, as closed during the same hours.
The rally's doors open at noon, with remarks scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm, according to the event page.
The Federal Aviation Administration has restricted flights over Anchorage and Wasilla in stages from 1:30 pm to 6:45 pm Tuesday, banning drones and limiting other aircraft. A separate drone ban over Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson runs from 3:35 pm to 10:15 pm.
People should expect more police and troopers across the Mat-Su Valley and follow officers' directions, the agencies said. Alaska 511 posts closure updates on its Mat-Su page.
