Wasilla staff float options to broaden the city sales tax, no vote yet
Renters, nonprofits and charitable gaming operators in Wasilla could all owe city sales tax under a broad menu of options city finance staff will present to the City Council on Monday.
The presentation is a report, not an action item; no ordinance is before the Council. Wasilla currently charges a 2.5% sales tax, capped at $12.50 because the city taxes only the first $500 of any sale. Staff list raising that cap, citing a study that found an increase would not harm local businesses.
Other options, modeled partly on Palmer's code, include requiring larger nonprofits to remit sales tax, taxing all charitable gaming regardless of nonprofit status, taxing residential rentals of 30 or more consecutive days, ending a prompt-payment credit for businesses, and revisiting several tax exemptions.
Staff frame the review as advancing the Council's goal of evaluating the city's revenue sources. Sales tax revenue reached about $26.3 million so far in fiscal 2026, up from $25.6 million the year before, as the number of registered remote sellers grew to nearly 4,000.
The public may testify in person for three minutes at City Hall, or submit written comments to the clerk by noon Monday.
