Vehicle strikes and kills moose on Richardson Highway in North Pole
A vehicle struck and killed a moose at the Richardson Highway and Old Richardson Highway in North Pole at about 5:30 am on Sept. 27, Alaska State Troopers said. The driver was not hurt. The collision disabled the vehicle.
The driver arranged a private tow, according to the troopers' daily dispatch. Troopers requested a charity to take the moose. D Detachment posted the report Oct. 7.
The Department of Public Safety runs a roadkill salvage program for vehicle-struck moose. Registered teams receive eligible animals free of charge. A team must include at least two adults who live in the area. It must reach the scene within about 30 minutes and remove the entire animal. The meat cannot be sold.
