Two seats open on Utqiagvik scholarship committee, letters due Sept. 17

Utqiagvik residents have until Sept. 17 to apply for two seats on the city committee that recommends scholarship awards, including its only alternate seat. Seat B's term ends May 2028; Seat F, the alternate, ends May 2027.

Letters go to the City Clerk's Office at City Hall, 2022 Ahkovak Street, and a form is available by email or pickup. City Clerk Tonya Oyagak's notice lists 907-852-5211 for questions.

Four of the committee's six seats have been in play within about two weeks. Letters of interest for Seats C and D went to the Utqiagvik City Council's Aug. 6 special meeting under new business, and the city is no longer advertising those two, though no minutes were located showing whether the council acted.

City code sets the Eben Hopson, Sr. Memorial Scholarship Committee at five members and an alternate, appointed by the council to staggered three-year terms, with the alternate counting toward quorum. The committee assesses applications for three scholarship periods a year and recommends awards to the mayor. The online code reflects legislation only through Jan. 25, 2018.
