Troopers say semi driver fell asleep before hitting car stopped on Parks Highway near Healy

A semi-truck driver fell asleep at the wheel and hit a car stopped partly in a travel lane on the Parks Highway near Healy on Friday, Sept. 25, Alaska State Troopers said. Troopers cited both drivers. Everyone hurt was taken to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Troopers from Nenana responded to Mile 257 at about 11:19 am. A 73-year-old driver from Massachusetts had pulled onto the shoulder to take a photo, but his car was still partly in the lane, troopers said. A southbound semi driven by a 32-year-old commercial driver from Anchorage hit it.

In July, about 60 miles south near Cantwell, a driver suffered minor injuries when their vehicle rolled over near Mile 199. Troopers cited that driver for negligent driving and said fatigue was considered a contributing factor, according to a separate trooper report.
