A Fairbanks couple died Monday morning in a head-on collision on the Parks Highway in Trapper Creek, Alaska State Troopers said. Their toddler had injuries troopers described as non-life-threatening and was taken to an Anchorage hospital.

The crash happened at mile 115, in front of the Three Bears gas station, and was reported at 9:06 am, according to the trooper dispatch.

A preliminary investigation found that a southbound 2018 Subaru Forester driven by Sasha Hart, 38, crossed the center line and hit a northbound 2008 Ford F-250 head-on, troopers said. Hart and her husband, David Hart, 41, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Next of kin have been notified and were going to the hospital where the child was taken, troopers said. They did not say how old the child is or whether the pickup's driver was hurt. The investigation is ongoing.

The crash closed the Parks Highway, the main road between Anchorage and Fairbanks, for about five hours, though traffic could detour through the Three Bears parking lot with only minor delays, troopers said. Alaska News reported the closure Monday.
