Mat-Su sex offender sweep produces 17 arrests, 15 of them for registration violations

Fifteen of the 17 arrests in a three-day Alaska State Troopers sex offender compliance sweep in the Mat-Su Valley were for registration violations, perjury, or both. One was for probation violations and one for violation of conditions of release. None of the 17 is for a new sex offense.

Teams attempted 99 of the 100 compliance checks on their list of registered sex offenders and located 60. The dispatch does not say the rest are missing, and it does not say whether teams will follow up on the registrants they did not find, or why one check was not attempted.

The operation ran Aug. 10 through Aug. 12 and drew about 33 officers and 14 support staff, according to a trooper dispatch. It is the only account of the Mat-Su operation troopers have released.

Trooper press releases carry a standing note that charges are accusations and defendants are presumed innocent.
