The Legislature will spend $675,000 to renovate its own Capitol parking garage

The Alaska Legislature is spending $675,000 to renovate its own parking garage at the State Capitol. The Legislative Council voted Tuesday to award the work to Dawson Alaska Inc., whose bid came in below the engineer's $824,109 estimate.

The job is preventive, Facilities Manager Serge Lesh told the council in an August memo — structural, drainage and surface repairs meant to extend the garage's life "before more extensive and costly repairs become necessary."

Two firms bid after the request for proposals closed Aug. 5, and an evaluation committee scored Dawson highest and recommended it. The award had been slated for a closed session, but council member Gray Jackson moved it in public instead.

Construction will start after the Legislature adjourns its current session, to limit disruption. Staff who use the reserved core-area lots may see their parking shift once work begins.
