Southcentral Foundation offers cultural education classes in June
Southcentral Foundation's Traditional Healing Clinic is offering cultural education classes in late May and early June teaching Alaska Native language preservation, traditional food preparation, and craft skills at its Anchorage location. The classes are part of the clinic's traditional healing services, which integrate cultural practices and Alaska Native languages into holistic health care.
Instructor Lia leads multiple sessions, including an Ahtna language class introducing participants to the foundations of the language spoken by the Ahtna peoples of the Copper River basin. The Learning Ahtna class is scheduled for June 3 at 4 p.m.
Other classes include traditional salmon dip preparation on June 3 at 4 p.m., where participants may bring their own accompaniments to enjoy samples, and berry jelly preservation on June 4 at 4 p.m.
The clinic also offers craft classes including Dreamcatchers on June 2 at 4 p.m., where Lia will share the practice of weaving small dream catchers, and Drawstring Bags on June 2 at 4 p.m., teaching participants to hand sew a drawstring bag with a pre-cut fabric kit.
A three-part kuspuk construction series begins May 31 at 4 p.m. Kuspuks are traditionally made overshirts distinguished by a loose fit, large front pocket, and decorative trim. Attendance at all three sessions is required, and space is limited.
All classes require advance registration and are held at the Traditional Healing Clinic, 4320 Diplomacy Drive, Suite 1010, Anchorage, AK 99508.
