Man arrested in Soldotna on felony sex offender registry charge

Troopers arrested a 74-year-old Soldotna man Thursday after a probation compliance check found he had not kept his information current on the state sex offender and child kidnapper registry, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Troopers arrested Randy Bird at about 2:18 p.m. on a charge of failure to register as a sex offender or child kidnapper in the first degree, a class C felony under Alaska law. The charge is an accusation, and Bird is presumed innocent.

Troopers were at a residence near Soldotna to assist Adult Probation with the check, they said in dispatch AK26089943. The dispatch says Bird has two prior convictions for failing to register. Under Alaska law the offense is first degree, and a felony, when a person has a prior conviction for it or acts to escape detection. Otherwise it is a misdemeanor.

The dispatch does not say what information was out of date.

Bird was remanded to Wildwood Pretrial Facility and held without bail pending arraignment.
