Preliminary magnitude 3.5 earthquake west of Hope is felt in Anchorage
A preliminary magnitude 3.5 earthquake struck west of Hope at 4:48 pm Tuesday and was felt in Anchorage.
The Alaska Earthquake Center placed the epicenter 19 miles west of Hope and 25 miles southwest of Anchorage, at a depth of 29.2 miles. The center's event page says the solution is automatic and has not been reviewed by a seismologist.
The quake was first listed at magnitude 3.6 before the automatic estimate was revised to 3.5. Preliminary earthquake measurements can change as seismologists review additional data.
Tuesday's quake is not the first felt near Hope this year. Alaska News reported Aug. 22 that a magnitude 3.9 earthquake had shaken Southcentral Alaska near Hope the night before. It was felt by hundreds across the region but brought light shaking and no damage. In June, a magnitude 4.2 earthquake shook the area west of Hope.
People who felt Tuesday's shaking can submit a report through the Earthquake Center's event page.
