One Spot Left in Denali Wildfire and Wildlife Workshop for Educators
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has one slot left in its June 2026 Wildfire and Wildlife educator workshop in Denali National Park, the agency said in its spring and summer Wildlife Ways newsletter released this month.
The workshop runs June 1 through 3, 2026. Alaska Geographic is partnering with ADF&G and Alaska Project Learning Tree to deliver the field course, which explores Denali's boreal ecosystems and addresses the intersection of wildfire science, wildlife habitat, and classroom applications.
The Wildlife Ways newsletter, produced each semester for educators, invites readers to click through to the full spring and summer edition online for details and links to resources. The newsletter also previews upcoming summer and fall events, including a save-the-date for a Tracks workshop in Fairbanks. It encourages educators to explore local ecosystems around their schools and watch for spring birds during migration season. The newsletter provides curriculum resources for planning the 2026-2027 school year and announces the topic for the 2026 issue of Alaska's Wild Wonders, the program's publication for educators.
The ADF&G Wildlife Education and Outreach program delivers education programs, curricula, and educator professional development statewide through the Division of Wildlife Conservation. Alaska Geographic serves as a nonprofit cooperating association for Alaska's public lands; it partners with the National Park Service and other federal and state agencies to provide education programs and field courses. Alaska Geographic's 2025 Denali field course list included offerings such as Boreal Forest Ecology in June 2025, part of an ongoing pattern of place-based teacher education courses in Denali.
For the 2026 season, the Denali Park Road remains closed at Mile 43 due to Polychrome Area Plan work at the Pretty Rocks landslide. That means educator field activities and bus-based access associated with the workshop will be constrained to the eastern portion of the park. Denali National Park offers free ranger-led programs, including hikes, campground talks, and sled dog demonstrations, primarily between mid-May and September.
