Mat-Su resolution would ask school board to start classes after Labor Day

A resolution before the Matanuska-Susitna Borough Assembly would ask every school in the borough to open the day after Labor Day. The measure does not set the calendar itself. It asks the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School Board to make the change.

Assemblymember Michael Bowles, who represents District 1, sponsors the resolution. It sits on the consent agenda for the Assembly's regular meeting Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 6 p.m. in the Assembly Chambers at 350 East Dahlia Avenue in Palmer, according to the meeting agenda.

The request covers all borough schools. The agenda lists no reason for it. Supporting documents appear in an informational memorandum attached to the item. The resolution is listed as RS 26-105.

State law already treats Labor Day as a school holiday. The Alaska statute on school holidays names Labor Day and lets a district's governing body declare others. The district's current 2026-2027 calendar is on file in the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development school-calendar database.

A similar start-date question came up in Anchorage this spring. Carl Jacobs spoke at an April 21 Anchorage School Board meeting on that district's calendar. He told members that "the community has made it clear that they want at least 6 months, ideally a year in advance" to plan around a new calendar.
