Magnitude 5.0 quake east of Denali felt by 147 people

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake shook Interior Alaska on Tuesday, and 147 people reported feeling it, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake struck at 12:49 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time (8:49 p.m. UTC) on July 28, 2026, at a depth of 5 kilometers. It registered intensity IV on the Modified Mercalli scale, described as light shaking with no expected damage.

The USGS ShakeMap places the epicenter 86 kilometers, or 53 miles, west-southwest of Healy, and roughly 52 kilometers east of Denali National Park.

Smaller quakes followed. The USGS recorded a magnitude 3.4 event near the same spot three minutes later, and a magnitude 2.6 at 3:01 a.m. UTC Wednesday.

Magnitude estimates from independent monitoring feeds ranged from 4.7 to 5.0 as automatic solutions were revised. Those feeds include the USGS, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre and the Alaska Earthquake Center.
