A magnitude 3.0 leads a weekend quake cluster in the Susitna Valley

A small cluster of earthquakes rattled the Susitna Valley over the weekend, the largest a magnitude 3.0 that reached Chugiak, Wasilla, and Anchorage late Sunday.

The 3.0 struck at 10:06 p.m., centered about 27 miles southeast of Talkeetna and nine miles down, north of Hatcher Pass. A handful of smaller quakes, in the 2.0-to-2.9 range, shook near Petersville and Susitna North from Saturday night into Sunday.

None of it is unusual for this ground. The Alaska Earthquake Center traces the region's shaking to three sources: the faults folded into the Cook Inlet basin, the Castle Mountain Fault, and a broad band of scattered seismicity running from northern Cook Inlet up to the Denali Fault. The valley sits on top of all three.
