Three Kodiak westside sections now open until further notice; 54-hour period ends 6 p.m. Saturday

Outer Karluk, Central and North Cape are open to commercial salmon seining until further notice, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game says, while a 54-hour period covering much of the rest of Kodiak closes at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. Izhut Bay, Outer Kitoi Bay and Inner Kitoi Bay remain closed.

Those three sections and Southwest Afognak fished through 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6 under a 96-hour extension, Advisory Announcement No. 45, itself the second in a row after one running from Aug. 29. Inner Uganik Bay was in that group and closed Sept. 6, then reopened in the current period. No. 45 also set 78 hours for Outer Ayakulik, the Alitak sections and Eastside Kodiak, and 54 hours for Afognak and eight Northwest Kodiak bays.

Chinook salmon 28 inches or longer may not be retained by purse seine gear anywhere in the Kodiak Area until further notice and must be released unharmed. Area biologist Geoff Spalinger is at (907) 486-1830.
