Kodiak review board to take up final North Star Elementary roof plans
The Kodiak Island Borough Architectural/Engineering Review Board meets at 4 pm Thursday, Oct. 8, in Room 121 of the borough conference room. Members will review final drawings for a new roof at North Star Elementary School. The agenda includes citizen comments.
The plans strip the school's 39,800-square-foot low-slope roof to the bare metal deck. Alaska's FY2026 district facility plans list the cost at $4,108,515.
The base bid replaces the roof assembly. An alternate option would swap the skylight system for a solid roof, new windows and new siding. The assembly approved a change order May 15, 2025, bringing in a structural engineer to assess whether the building could support solid walls. The drawings use a 169 mph design wind speed. The building will stay occupied during the work, and interior layout and exits will remain unchanged.
"North Star Roof is 100% in going to the ARB," Borough Manager Amy Williams said at the assembly's Oct. 1 meeting.
The board approved the 95% design June 29.
