Borough Planning Commission to hear proposal for Nikiski gravel pit on Oct. 12

A paving company wants to open a gravel pit on its land at Mile 31 of the Kenai Spur Highway in Nikiski, and the Kenai Peninsula Borough Planning Commission will take public comment on the plan Monday, Oct. 12. The commission could decide that night.

Colaska Inc., which does business as QAP, needs a borough conditional land use permit, the approval required for gravel pits and other material sites, to develop the pit.

The borough mailed notices to landowners within half a mile of the site. Residents whose homes are within 1,000 feet can ask the borough to require screening between the pit and their homes, if they provide evidence to support the request.

The hearing starts at 7:30 pm in the Betty J. Glick Assembly Chambers in Soldotna, with remote participation through Zoom where feasible. Speakers get three minutes each. Written comments go to planner Ryan Raidmae at [email protected] by 1 pm Friday, Oct. 9. The application and maps will be posted online the week before the hearing.

Anyone who comments, in writing or at the hearing, becomes a party of record and can appeal the commission's decision to the Borough Clerk within 15 days of the notice of decision.
