Juvenile charged with attempted murder after Klawock standoff

A juvenile opened fire on a Klawock police officer Monday night and kept shooting at officers from inside a Prince of Wales Island home, Alaska State Troopers said. No one was injured.

Klawock Police had gone to the home on a disturbance call involving the juvenile, according to the trooper dispatch. Officers were speaking with other occupants when the juvenile came out of a bedroom with a rifle and fired at one of the officers, troopers said. The officer dodged the shot and got the other occupants out of the house.

Klawock Police asked for trooper help at 10 p.m. on Aug. 24, 2026. The juvenile kept firing from inside, refused repeated chances to surrender and continued threatening law enforcement, troopers said. Troopers deployed OC chemical munitions inside the residence. The juvenile then surrendered without further incident.

He was remanded to Craig Jail on a charge of attempted murder. Additional charges may follow as the investigation continues. The charge is an accusation, and the juvenile is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. The account comes entirely from the Department of Public Safety dispatch, which contains no statement from the juvenile or a defense attorney.

Alaska juvenile cases usually enter the system as delinquency matters handled by the Division of Juvenile Justice, which runs 13 probation offices statewide and provides diversion, detention, treatment and probation services. Delinquency records are generally confidential unless a court orders them open. State rules allow a district attorney to seek waiver of a youth over 16 to adult court, a step that requires specific filings and court findings.
