Juneau firm Hunatek wins two State Department staffing contracts worth $788,321

Hunatek System Solutions LLC, a Juneau firm, won two State Department staffing contracts worth a combined $788,321 within three days, its third and fourth documented State Department staffing awards. A $1,038,213 Western Hemisphere Affairs contract runs from Aug. 30, 2026, through Aug. 29, 2027.

The larger new award, $608,321 (19AQMM26F1450), runs from Sept. 23, 2026, through Sept. 22, 2028. The second, $180,000 (19AQMM26F1541), begins Friday and runs through Sept. 26, 2027. Neither entry states whether the work was competitively bid or sole-sourced.

Hunatek, located at 9301 Glacier Highway, is registered as a small business, an Alaska Native corporation-owned firm and an SBA-certified small disadvantaged business under NAICS code 541611. Its listed 8(a) pool participation ends Sept. 10, 2030; contract options run through Oct. 23, 2045.

Congress opened the 8(a) program to Native corporations in 1986. The program can direct federal work to qualifying firms without competitive bidding. The Government Accountability Office has reported incomplete data in the Small Business Administration's oversight of Tribal 8(a) firms, and a Senate record cites critics who say Alaska Native corporation preferences concentrate work among a small number of firms. Mike Torres of Huna Totem Corporation told a Resource Development Council forum in May that Native contractors face "misinformation and questioning our integrity."
