Juneau bought two fire trucks. Passengers will pay for them until 2035.
Juneau's airport already bought two fire trucks. It is now asking the federal government for permission to keep charging passengers until 2035, partly to pay for them.
The $4.50 fee on every ticket leg out of Juneau has been collected without interruption since 1998. The airport wants to extend it through August 2035, which would bring in about $6.8 million.
Two of the 19 projects on the list are those fire trucks. Together they would take $2.7 million, roughly 40 percent of everything the charge collects, and they are the only two projects on the list with no federal money behind them at all.
The airport has already made the purchase, borrowing from its operating funds and fleet reserve to do it. The Assembly declined in August to cover one of the trucks out of terminal sales tax.
The rest of the list is more ordinary. Federal grants would cover $61.7 million of the $70 million total, with the passenger charge and $1.5 million of the airport's own money making up Juneau's share. Among the projects: fixing an uneven runway shoulder, and an elevator to make the departure lounge accessible.
The reserve the airport has been drawing on is nearly empty. It holds $59,179, down from $201,361 at the start of the fiscal year, after commitments including $50,697 for the air traffic control tower roof. If the FAA approves the extension, some of what the airport already spent could be reimbursed back into it.
Those figures are preliminary until the city closes its books for the year.
Public comment on the charge closed Aug. 26. The airport board meets Sept. 10, where the reserve is listed for discussion.
