Weather cancels Koniag townhalls in two villages, three weeks before the board vote

Weather canceled Koniag's first two shareholder townhalls Wednesday, ending in-person question time in two Kodiak Island villages weeks before shareholders vote on three board seats.

"Today's townhall in Akhiok has been canceled due to high winds," the corporation said in a 7 a.m. update. Shareholders and descendants, who need not hold stock, were directed to the school at 9 a.m. for a meal, sign-in and swag bag, the townhall's own hour and place.

At 11:30 a.m. Koniag called off Old Harbor too, citing weather conditions without naming high winds as it had for Akhiok. Residents were invited to the Nuniaq Center at 1:30 p.m. for the same meal and sign-in.

Koniag's proxy notice called the townhalls the place to hear board candidates and ask questions. Proxies, votes cast in advance, are due Sept. 30 at 5 p.m. Alaska time, at koniagvote.com. The annual meeting is Oct. 3 in Anchorage.

Koniag has not said whether either village gets another. Seven remain: Larsen Bay at 1 p.m. and Kodiak at 5 p.m. today, then Ouzinkie, Port Lions, Seattle, Portland and Soldotna.
