Funny River hunter cited after self-reporting sub-legal moose kill in Unit 15B

Self-report leads to citation over sub-legal moose

A Funny River hunter's decision to call in his own violation led Alaska Wildlife Troopers to seize a bull moose's meat and antlers and issue him a mandatory court citation. Kevin Lauver, 64, told the Alaska Department of Fish and Game that the animal he shot in Unit 15B did not meet the area's legal requirements.

The call came in at about 11 a.m. on Sept. 10, according to the troopers' dispatch. Investigators found forks on both antlers and an overall width of roughly 22 inches. Unit 15B allows a bull only if it carries a spike, at least three brow tines, or a spread of 50 inches; Lauver's moose met none of those thresholds.

Troopers seized the meat and antlers. The meat was donated to a charity. Lauver was issued a mandatory court citation to appear at the Kenai Courthouse; the citation is an accusation, not a finding of guilt.

The dispatch says the investigation followed Lauver's call and includes no comment from him.
