Frosty Fuels seeks state renewal of its Cold Bay oil spill plan; comments open Friday
Aleut Ventures has asked the state to renew the oil spill prevention and response plan for its Frosty Fuels bulk plant in Cold Bay, and the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation will take public comment Friday through Dec. 1.
The plant on Reeve Avenue holds up to 568,416 gallons of jet fuel, aviation and unleaded gasoline and diesel, according to DEC's public notice. Fuel comes in by sea and goes out to aircraft, tank trucks and vehicles. The current plan expires in April 2027.
Cold Bay's dock, which the Aleutians East Borough calls the only fuel source for the town and its airport, has been closed since August. The borough has asked contractors to bid on repairs.
DEC's list of contaminated sites includes the Cold Bay Frosty Fuel Tank Farm, where contamination was found in 1992. The site is listed as active, and DEC approved a groundwater monitoring plan for it in February.
Residents can ask DEC in writing for a public hearing before Nov. 16.
