Fairbanks electric bills to jump $50 as GVEA files rate increase
Golden Valley Electric Association filed a quarterly rate adjustment with the Regulatory Commission of Alaska that will add roughly $50 to the average monthly electric bill in Fairbanks. The new rate takes effect June 1, 2026.
The utility's cost-of-power adjustment surcharge rises from $0.12779 to $0.20652 per kilowatt-hour, a 62 percent increase. The filing, designated TA404-13, also includes a small facility power purchase rate decrease from $0.13527 to $0.13323 per kilowatt-hour.
Golden Valley Electric Association is an electric cooperative serving Interior Alaska, including Fairbanks, Delta Junction, Nenana, and Healy. The cooperative adjusts its cost-of-power surcharge quarterly to recover actual fuel and purchased power costs, which are passed directly through to members without markup.
Interior Alaska utilities such as GVEA are structurally exposed to global liquid fuel markets because a portion of their generation stack relies on oil and diesel. Spikes in global oil prices translate into higher cost-of-power charges and electric bills for Fairbanks-area customers. State Representative Zack Fields told a legislative committee that Fairbanks has already seen the impact of inadequate gas supply to meet demand.
Interior utilities rely more heavily on oil and diesel resources than Southcentral utilities with direct access to Cook Inlet gas. Governor Mike Dunleavy warned that predictions show gas prices could reach $5 per thousand cubic feet in a few years, which translates to about 14 cents per kilowatt-hour.
GVEA's March through May rate period set the cost-of-power adjustment at $0.12779 per kilowatt-hour, resulting in an estimated $3.34 monthly bill increase for a typical residential customer using 600 kilowatt-hours per month. The proposed June 1 surcharge represents an increase of $0.07873 per kilowatt-hour, which would add approximately $47 to the monthly bill of a customer using 600 kilowatt-hours.
The filing is available for public inspection at the Regulatory Commission of Alaska office in Anchorage or via the commission's website using filing reference TA404-13.
