Peyuluk: Volcano screening at Anchorage International Film Festival

📍 Anchorage Museum

About this event

The 17-minute documentary "Peyuluk: Volcano" has been selected to screen at the Anchorage International Film Festival. The film, which explores life at the foot of Mt. Veniaminof on the Alaska Peninsula, will be shown as part of the Absolutely Alaska Shorts block at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, 2026, at the Anchorage Museum. It is also available for free online viewing. The film was co-produced by the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Geophysical Institute, the Alaska Volcano Observatory, and the Native Village of Perryville. It combines Indigenous knowledge with scientific research on volcano hazards and preparedness, highlighting the history of Perryville residents who are descendants of those evacuated from the 1912 Novarupta eruption. Executive producers for the project include Taryn Lopez and Lynda McGilvary. The film was developed under two National Science Foundation-funded projects, specifically the PREEVENTS eruption forecasting project and the Cultural Connections to Alaska Science project. The production team included various GI staff and community members from Perryville.
