Doyon and Tanana Chiefs warn of rising fuel costs in Interior
Doyon, Limited and Tanana Chiefs Conference warned last week that international shipping disruptions are driving up fuel costs across Interior Alaska. Communities should plan early for summer and fall deliveries.
Many Interior villages depend on seasonal barge shipments for the bulk of their annual heating fuel and diesel supply. Delayed or more expensive deliveries could leave households short when winter returns.
"International conflicts and disruptions to major shipping routes continue to affect increased prices for gasoline, diesel, and heating fuel," Shelley Hosken, Family Services Administrative Support Manager at Tanana Chiefs Conference, said in announcing the joint statement. "As many Alaska communities rely on fuel deliveries during the summer and fall months, these changes may affect both the cost and timing of fuel orders later this year."
Doyon has more than 20,000 Alaska Native shareholders, many of whom live in or near Fairbanks and other Interior communities. Tanana Chiefs Conference represents 42 Interior Alaska Native villages.
The warning adds to a series of fuel-cost alerts that have reached rural Alaska over the past two years as global disruptions and regional supply constraints have combined to push diesel and heating fuel prices well above urban rates.
"While long-term impacts remain uncertain, we encourage shareholders, rural residents, and village leadership to stay informed and begin conversations early with local suppliers and utilities as planning efforts move forward throughout the summer," Hosken said.
