Dalton Highway closes Mile 3 to 6 Tuesday morning

Drivers will lose the Dalton Highway entirely for about five hours Tuesday morning. The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities will close all lanes in both directions from mile marker 3 to 6, from 7 a.m. to about noon Sept. 22, to replace a culvert at the bottom of the 5-Mile grade, per the Alaska 511 closure listing.

The listing's event card gives a planned end time of 12:30 p.m., half an hour later than the noon in its details.

One-lane traffic under flagger control follows until the work finishes, roughly 3 p.m., with a 15 mph limit and flaggers directing traffic all day. Any change will show at 511.alaska.gov, the department's primary source for Dalton road conditions.

Two more work zones are live up the road: daily flagging from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Sept. 30 between mile markers 279 and 394 for utility work over the Alyeska fuel gas line, and single-lane traffic with 24-hour flagging at Milepost 315.5, where permanent repairs began this month. A June landslide closed the highway near mile marker 230.

The Dalton runs 414 miles from the Elliott Highway to Deadhorse. The state's 2016 freight plan calls it Alaska's road with the highest share of truck traffic, over 80% near Prudhoe Bay.
