Artists with disabilities sell their work at the Embracing AK Disabilities Expo in Palmer

Artist entrepreneurs with disabilities will sell their work Monday, Aug. 24, at the Embracing AK Disabilities Expo in Palmer, where families can also meet disability service agencies gathered in one room.

The Governor's Council on Disabilities and Special Education has scheduled the event for 11am to 4:30pm at the Alaska State Fairgrounds Events Building, reached through the Purple Gate, at 2075 Glenn Hwy. It pairs the Shining Abilities Craft Fair with booths from agencies, community organizations and family support services, plus a calm-down sensory area and sensory activities. The council said the newly built events hall includes accessible family restrooms with full-size changing areas.

The expo falls on a working day of the Alaska State Fair, which runs Aug. 21 through Sept. 7. One thing the fair's listings don't make clear is whether reaching the expo hall requires paying gate admission — worth checking with the council, which can be reached at 1-888-269-8990, before you go.
