Anchorage Urban Design Commission to sunset after May meeting

The Anchorage Urban Design Commission will hold its final regular meeting in May after the Assembly adopted an ordinance eliminating the volunteer body, a municipal staff member told commissioners Tuesday night.

The Assembly adopted the ordinance Tuesday. It eliminates the commission that has reviewed design elements of major development and transportation projects in Anchorage. After the May meeting, the commission will hold one special session to adopt final minutes and resolutions before design reviews transfer to the Planning and Zoning Commission.

A municipal planning staff member described the decision as efficiency-driven rather than a reflection on the quality of the commission's work. The staff member said the commission's input had value and thanked commissioners for their volunteer service to the community.

One commissioner expressed concern about losing the commission's perspective. The commissioner said the Urban Design Commission has a different vision that is important for the community, but acknowledged commissioners cannot change the Assembly's decision.

The commission has one public hearing scheduled for its May meeting, a design variance review. After that final regular meeting and a brief special session to approve minutes, all future design reviews will go to the Planning and Zoning Commission.

The sunset follows a municipal audit report that identified the commission's October 14, 2025 sunset date. Municipal policy requires the clerk to notify the Assembly and mayor at least 120 days before a board or commission sunsets.

The Urban Design Commission has reviewed major projects including trail connections, highway interchanges, and development proposals. Commissioners serve as volunteers and meet twice monthly to evaluate design elements against municipal standards and comprehensive plans.
