Anchorage police arrest man on felony charges after shooting wounds one and suspect vehicle crashes
Anchorage police arrested a 23-year-old Anchorage man Thursday on felony weapons and assault charges after a shooting that injured another man, according to a department release.
Patrol officers responded at about 12:21 Thursday to reports of shots fired near Cordova Street and East 2nd Avenue, the release said. It did not say whether that was morning or afternoon. Officers then found the victim, an adult man, at Bragaw Street and Mountain View Drive. His injuries are not life-threatening, police said.
Moments later, police found a vehicle that had crashed in the 300 block of Concrete Street. The people inside were identified as suspects in the shooting, and one of them was arrested on multiple charges, the department said.
Court records list four felony charges against him, all dated Thursday. The most serious is first-degree misconduct involving weapons, a class A felony. Under Alaska law, that charge includes firing a gun from a moving vehicle in circumstances that create a substantial and unjustifiable risk of injury or property damage.
He also faces two counts of third-degree assault, one for causing injury with a weapon and one for causing fear of injury with a weapon. A fourth charge, third-degree misconduct involving weapons, accuses him of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Under state law, that covers knowingly having a gun that can be concealed on one's person after a felony conviction. The three lesser charges are class C felonies.
He was arraigned in custody at 2:30 pm Thursday, and an attorney from the Public Defender Agency was appointed, court records show. His next court date is Nov. 12 at 1 pm.
Police said the case remains under investigation.
