The Assembly says Anchorage hunger is rising. Its resolution does not say how it knows.

The Anchorage Assembly's own count of food insecurity has gone up year over year. A resolution on Tuesday's agenda — recognizing September as Hunger Action Month, sponsored by Assembly Chair Anna Brawley, Vice-Chair Zack Volland, five other members and Mayor Suzanne LaFrance — says nearly 40,000 Anchorage residents, including more than 12,000 children, face food insecurity, and that the overall rate "has risen to 13.8 percent" with childhood food insecurity exceeding 18.4 percent.

The figures are higher than the year before. Reading the 2025 version of the same annual resolution at the Assembly's Aug. 26, 2025 meeting, then-member Felix Rivera said Anchorage had "roughly 36,740 food insecure people, including more than 10,000 children."

Neither resolution says where its figures come from. An archived Feeding America county-level map lists Anchorage Municipality at 12.0 percent food insecurity and 15.7 percent child food insecurity in an earlier dataset, so it is not clear the three sets of numbers describe the same series.

The measure recognizes September as Hunger Action Month, the national campaign the Feeding America network of food banks launched in 2007. It names the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program as "the most effective anti-hunger program for Anchorage residents," and credits the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children with feeding mothers, babies and children under five.

It carries no appropriation. Its operative clause encourages residents to give time and money to the Food Bank of Alaska or other groups in the city's anti-hunger network. The resolution sits on Tuesday's consent agenda, where items pass as a block unless a member pulls one.
