An Anchorage housing provider gets another year of federal help for disabled renters

An Anchorage housing provider has received another year of federal funding to help very-low-income renters with disabilities afford a place to live. Andrew Housing Co drew about $38,000 this month — the latest annual installment on a HUD contract it has been renewing since at least 2021, worth roughly $298,500 across eight payments over that span.

The money comes through HUD's Section 811 program, which helps adults with disabilities live independently in the community rather than in institutions. Under the program, tenants pay 30 percent of their income toward rent, and the federal subsidy covers the rest — a bridge that keeps housing affordable for people living on very low or fixed incomes. It's a rental subsidy for an existing building, not money to build anything new.

HUD says its rental-assistance contracts serve about 34,000 households a year nationwide. This month's payment keeps one Anchorage building among them for another year.
