Alaska's federal obligations are down 1.7% this year, and September has barely started

Federal obligations recorded against Alaska, measured by where the work is performed, total $15.95 billion through August, down 1.7 percent from the same point a year earlier. Obligations are commitments, not money out the door.

The monthly pattern is lopsided by design. July brought $2.31 billion, August $873.62 million, and the first 11 days of September $90.27 million. September is normally the federal year's biggest month, and last September brought $2.23 billion, so that figure will climb a great deal before the fiscal year closes Sept. 30.

A separate count, of prime awards to recipients based in Alaska rather than work performed here, puts the fiscal year to date at $16.29 billion across 20,427 awards. That ranks Alaska 45th among 56 states and territories, roughly where its population would put it.

What the numbers ride on is a state economy unusually tied to them. University of Alaska Anchorage economists told a Commonwealth North forum in June that federal spending contributed nearly $9 billion of Alaska's $16.5 billion in GDP growth between 2015 and 2023, more than half of it.
