AEA opens Round 19 renewable energy grants; board meets July 21
Communities and utilities have until September 11 to apply for state renewable energy grants, as the Alaska Energy Authority opened Round 19 of its Renewable Energy Fund program Monday.
Rural Alaska communities that rely on diesel generators and pay some of the highest electricity rates in the country stand to benefit most from the program. At a 2026 Alaska State House Energy Committee hearing, Donna Mears said: "If we keep letting these opportunities pass by, then we're just stuck with importing fuel."
What the Program Covers
Round 19 is the latest cycle in a program that has funded wind, solar, hydro, and storage projects across the state over nearly two decades. The Alaska Energy Authority describes itself in its own governance documents as "a public corporation of the State of Alaska governed by a board," established in 1976.
Applying
The application window opens at 8 a.m. on July 13 and runs until 4 p.m. Sept. 11, 2026. Application materials and the Request for Applications are available on the AEA website.
What Winning a Grant Does Not Guarantee
Stakeholders and rural utilities have long noted that grant availability alone does not guarantee project delivery. Financing, match requirements, project development capacity, and long-term maintenance support all shape whether a community can reduce diesel use after winning an award.
The AEA board meets Tuesday, July 21, at 9 a.m. via electronic media and will continue in session until recess or adjournment. The agenda is available through the AEA website or by calling 907-771-3074.
