A woman lost overnight near Port Heiden was found alive, her dog by her side

A woman who went missing near Port Heiden was found alive Saturday afternoon, about five miles off a nearby trail, and her dog had stayed with her the whole time, at one point chasing off a bear, the Alaska State Troopers said.

A local pilot spotted her at 2:55 p.m. Saturday. Searchers reached her by ATV and took her to a clinic with minor injuries.

She had been camping with a companion near the Bristol Bay community when she was reported missing early Friday. Local residents and troopers searched by ATV and fixed-wing aircraft through that day without finding her, and the Coast Guard joined when the search resumed the next morning, the day she was found.

Troopers did not name the woman or say how she became separated from her camp.
