A Soldotna council member's consulting firm earned up to $1 million last year

Soldotna pays Daniel Nelson somewhere between $2,000 and $5,000 a year to sit on its city council. Governments paid his consulting firm somewhere between $500,000 and $1 million last year.

Nelson owns Katmai Preparedness Solutions, a Soldotna company that does emergency management work for small governments, tribes and nonprofits. He reported the income in a disclosure filed Sept. 3 with the Alaska Public Offices Commission, ahead of an Oct. 6 election in which he is running for the seat he already holds.

The filing names twelve clients, and ten of them are governments or public bodies. The largest is the Quinault Indian Nation, at $100,000 to $200,000. The rest include the Anchorage School District, the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe, the Ketchikan Gateway Borough and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The City of Soldotna is not among them.

The twelve named clients account for between $269,000 and $550,000. Nelson's reported total is $500,000 to $1 million. APOC disclosures use bands rather than exact figures, so the two sets of numbers do not line up neatly against each other.

His spouse, Keri Nelson, reported $20,000 to $50,000 in part-time administrative pay from Katmai and another $10,000 to $20,000 in seasonal labor pay from the City of Soldotna.
