A 20-acre parcel near Homer is headed to public hands — but for what?

Twenty acres of state land about 10 miles northwest of Homer could be sold to a public or charitable group without ever going to auction — a path Alaska reserves for exactly that purpose, letting community organizations and public bodies acquire land they'd never win in open bidding.

The catch: the state's notice doesn't say who wants this particular parcel, or what they plan to do with it. It's open for public comment through Aug. 31, and it's not the only one — a second no-auction sale on the same timeline would hand land near the Cheri Lakes Subdivision to the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation.

For anyone with a stake in either parcel, the comment window is also the only door to a later appeal: only those who write in now can formally challenge the final decision. Comments on the Homer land go to Andrew Miller at the state's Division of Mining, Land and Water in Anchorage.
