Articles from this transcript
Good evening, everyone. Earlier today at approximately 10:05, officers responded to a burglary call off of Lowell Road. Using a whole host of technologies, We were able to get a location of the suspect that was at Carr's Huffman. We were obtain— able to obtain security footage from the business where the burglary occurred and provide that information to all the responding areas. We were also able to obtain video footage from inside Carr's and were able to observe the suspect not only go into Carr's but also exit out the back door of the of the car store.
That led us to an article of clothing that the suspect discarded that was originally worn during the incident, during the burglary. We also found items that were discarded that were taken in the burglary, and then eventually there was a, a witness that pointed us in the direction of the suspect. We had one officer that made contact with the suspect, and almost immediately after contacting the suspect, they became involved in a physical altercation that went to the ground. The suspect produced a gun and fired a single round. A second officer arrived at the time that round was being fired and fired one single shot into the suspect.
We immediately provided medical aid to the suspect, and then he was pronounced deceased on scene. No officers were injured during the incident. Um, the incident was caught on body-worn cameras as well as dash camera videos, so far that I know of. There may be private cameras that caught it as well, but I just don't have that information at this time. All of this information that I have so far, again, is preliminary.
I will be able to provide a more detailed story of what happened during the incident in the second press conference. Ultimately, what we had here today is an incident that occurred, a burglary, which is a crime that's just been causing all sorts of havoc within Anchorage. Property crimes in general, burglary, you know, which is essentially a property crime inside of a business.
We— you have another incident where there's an officer that is responding to a crime, conducting an investigation, and there's a gun produced, a round that's fired at, in their direction, near etc., of an officer.
Officers used every tool that they had available. We had multiple members from the public, various different technology that was used from the public, as with the video from the burglary location as well as inside of cars that helped during the course of this investigation. I can't, uh, can't thank our community enough for doing that. And then finally we had officers that just continue to answer the call. I know a lot of what happened in this incident so far, and as I typically tell you, we're going to hold off on some of those fine details because we really want to preserve those officers telling the story from their memory before I tell it to you all, because I certainly don't want them to watch this and hear what I have to say.
But we're certainly going to provide that information to you all in about a week when we have our follow-up press conference. But there are so many things in this call that could have been gone. It could have gone wrong in just a very short couple of seconds, you know, but for our officers' amazing, decisive actions. And I couldn't be more proud of the team today. And with that, I'll take some questions.
You said the first call for burglary came in about 10:05 this morning? Yes, 10:05 this morning. What time did the officer make contact with the suspect? So we pinpoint the location at Carr's at about 1:25 this afternoon. So we were working this from the time we got the call until, uh, the conclusion of the call.
And then we were able to identify the suspect on the video about 10 minutes later. And then the officer involved shooting incident was roughly around 1:40, 1:41, right about that time frame.
When the officer contacted the suspect, was the person, you know, fleeing on foot, running, just kind of walking away? Um, were they in a vehicle? Can you kind of shed a little bit more light on sort of those particulars? Yeah, the only thing I could really tell you is that the subject was on foot. Uh, the officer's body-worn camera that first contacted the suspect has not gone through the loading cycle to where I could view it.
So I don't have much— many more details other than I know that the suspect was on foot. How that, that conversation, altercation, communication between the two of them unfolded, I don't know. I just know it's very short in duration. And there was a— remind me, I'm sorry, I didn't catch this— there was two 2 gunshots, one from the suspect and one from the officer who is, um, you know, in an altercation with the suspect, right? You're correct on there are 2 gunshots.
The officer that was on the ground with the suspect, that officer did not fire the round. It is a second arriving officer that arrived and fired the round.
Uh, and just to be clear, the robbery or the burglary did take place in Cars? Nope. Burglary. Lower. Lower Road.
Yep. 10:05 This morning. And then, you know, Johnson, we're gonna have a fun conversation next press conference about how we use technology to get from Lower Road to cars. I can already see that coming. But.
So was this the robbery of an individual or a business? Business. Okay, but you're not at liberty to say what business at this time? We're going to hold off on that for For now. We can do one more question.
Did you have a question? Do we know if the suspect had any previous priors in regards to burglary or anything in that nature? As of right now, I have not looked up his criminal history. A little bit more important for me to just have this interaction with you in the community to get this initial details out so we can kind of set the stage for what really happened, and I'll provide some of that information in the next one. Thank you, everyone.
