Wind advisory warns of 50 mph gusts in Unalaska and Nikolski Sunday
Residents of Unalaska and Nikolski should tie down or bring in outdoor gear Sunday. West to southwest winds of 30 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph, are expected in both communities, according to a wind advisory from the National Weather Service in Anchorage. The advisory is in effect from 4 am until 10 pm Sunday.
The strongest gusts are expected at different times in the two communities. Nikolski is forecast to see them from early through late morning. In Unalaska, the peak gusts are forecast from early afternoon through the evening. Forecasters said winds will steadily ease through the evening.
The weather service said the wind will blow around unsecured objects, could cause a few power outages and may make travel difficult. A low pressure system in the southern Bering Sea is driving the wind. Unalaska Bay is also under a gale warning Sunday, with southwest winds of 35 knots and gusts to 45 knots on the water.
The advisory follows a high wind warning the weather service issued for Unalaska and Nikolski Sept. 25 and 26, with sustained winds of 40 to 50 mph and gusts up to 60 mph forecast overnight into that Saturday morning.
