Wasilla's parks commission backs a ball field expansion with no money behind it

Wasilla's Parks and Recreation Commission voted Wednesday to endorse the Mat-Su Softball Association's plan to expand ball fields at the Bumpus Recreation Area, and to pass that endorsement along to the city council. There is no funding attached.

The motion came from Commissioner Dan Flickenstein, who also represents the softball association. He called the memorandum well done and said it covered the main points.

The association's five-year plan is two years old, documented by an engineering firm and presented to the city's public works director. "And now it's a matter of waiting," Flickenstein said, hoping the project gets prioritized and eventually considered for funding.

Where it might get considered is the city's parks master plan. Bidding on that has closed, proposals are under review, and the plan is expected in 2027.
